There are two places in Old Town Pasadena that I highly recommend for the steaks. Arroyo is one of them. The steaks are all USDA Prime aged for a minimum of 40 days. The atmosphere is comfortable and it's a great place for business luncheons. They have a talented piano player there nightly to accompany your meal. Start off with their Shrimp cocktail. They have an extensive wine selection but I usually start with their Martini's (shaken, not stirred). It's loud there so you need to speak up. Arroyo is always packed so I recommend a reservation.
Admittedly, the cuisine at this restaurant is not bad. That, however is not enough to make me want to return. The one time I tried this place there were numerous loud, rude and inconsiderate customers. The service was slow and inattentive and when you could get the waiters attention he was very patronising, would promise to get our requests and then disapear. Getting a coffee refill was almost impossible. I do not like making a fuss when dining out so we just paid the check and left. Several friends stated that I should have complained to the manager, but my feeling is that if they can not train their employees properly in the first place, they are not worth patronising. If the manager was paying attention he or she would already know what was going on.
I like the Arroyo Chop House. Sure it's noisy, but that's because everyone is having a good time (If I want quiet I'll go to a library or a church.). Sure the service is slow, but that just gives you time to enjoy your meal and the company of the people with you. The food is great, no matter what you order it's delicious.
